pikelets

3 December 2001

i had pikelets for lunch though the packet they came in was labelled crumpets. looking for pikelets online brings up mainly antipodean links where “pikelet” seem to denote what i’d call a drop scone. i found article by marion watson about muffins, crumpets and pikelets which says that these are all known interchangeable names for what the supermarkets now make us all call “crumpets”. muffins is chiefly used in the north and pikelets in the midlands. since my parents are midlands people it makes sense that i grew up with pikelets for tea.

dictionary.com knows nothing about pikelets. it does know about various bits of dialect that darren comes out with though. like ligging out, and being nesh, both incidentally listed as obsolete.
