When I read the Garnethill trilogy (and loved it) I hoped Mina would become an absolute must read author, I can’t get enough of those! However I’ve found her next books a little so-so. Not bad, just could do better.

This is the first in a new series. It’s set in 1981 and features Glaswegian Paddy Meehan, an 18 year old eager to get into the investigative journalism business. I’m guessing from the 25 year old setting that the plan is to age Paddy throughout the books and follow her career progression.

I found this book slow going at first, and the plot a bit too easily sorted out at the end, but on the whole I thought it was a promising start to a series and will be looking out for the next one. Paddy’s a good character, lots of background details make her realistic, and she’s flawed like the best of them.
