It’s the summer of 1969 and Frances takes a job documenting the garden of an English country house for the absent American who has purchased it. Up to this point in her life she has led a sheltered life in London caring for her domineering mother who has just died. At the house she meets a younger couple, Peter and Cara, who surprise her by wanting to become friends with her, friends aren’t something that have really featured in her life before. The story of their summer in the big house and garden is narrated by an older, unwell, bed-bound Frances looking back at it and recalling the events. The slow revelation of what’s going on is really well done. An author I’d like to read more of.
