A Week in Winter

I picked this up for a bit of lightweight reading. I first read Maeve Binchy as a teenager and loved her and I still find myself enjoying her books today though not in the same all encompassing kind of way. I’m kind of sad this is her last one though I have still have several more to read. She uses a technique she’s used several times before where each chapter takes up the tale of a different character, so that they are almost short stories but they intermingle to make a whole. I’m not usually a fan of short stories - but this style of bit by bit storytelling works for me. It’s a bit heavy on the “happy ever after”s with nearly every character getting some kind of redemption by the end of their piece, but I can forgive it that. There’s plenty to think about without it needing to be dark as well. A long way from her best but I don’t regret the time spent reading it.
