Picked this up along with several other library book possibilities for a 'U' author to read. Didn't expect it to grab me but it easily hooked me in for the first half of the book. After that though I found it easy to put down again. Everyone else seems to concur that the ending is faster moving than the beginning but I lost interest as the book went on. Probably one of those 'It's not the book, it's just me' things!

This was a library book.

The Vows of Silence. Susan Hill

The Vows of Silence. Susan Hill by Susan Hill

I can sympathise with people who are finding this series has a bit too much of everything. Simon Serrailler's family have another tragic event to deal with. And he has another serial killer to catch in a small cathedral city. I'm willing to go with the flow though. I liked it and I can take more of it. I find Simon a more interesting character with each book and I think I find him easier to identify with than some readers by the look of some reviews I've read.

I think I've mentioned before that this series seems to have more in common with a family saga than a mystery novel and I like it that way. More please.

This was a paperback.

Kate asked me what I didn't like about the book and I replied and then realised that my reply would do very well as a review of my reading of this book. So here it is repeated for posterity to save me thinking about it any more!

Oh mostly I think it suffered from being my out-and-about book that I keep for half-hours waiting here and there. I never really got into the story or cared much about the main character. Though what usually happens with books is that in one of the odd half-hours I get caught up in something and bring the book back into the house to keep going with it. That just never happened with this so it took me weeks to get through it whilst caring less-and-less about what happened.

Also the fact that it's very well regarded, widely read and liked makes me want to register my indifference more strongly than I might do with a less well known book! And I previously read & enjoyed A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author so I expected to like this more than I did.

I can see there's a good book in there that other people have enjoyed but I didn't really get it. I guess my 2/5 stars are probably more about me than the book!
