Another fun episode in this series; consistent with what's gone before and enjoyable. Some of the plot seemed a bit pedestrian but there's a good twist lurking in the tail of the story.
Purchased on 24th February 2004.
3 copies of this book are available on BookMooch.

Darren picked out a selection of three books he'd read for me to choose between and I picked this one to read. I did the same for him and he's reading Human Croquet by Kate Atkinson.
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book with Thérèse marrying her dull cousin, living in a Paris haberdashery shop with her aunt and taking her husband's friend as a lover. The lovers then plot to kill off the husband and the book gets increasingly depressing as they can't live with the consequences of what they're doing. I found the book a very easy ride at the beginning and increasingly more difficult to read and the story got into murkier waters. As usual with a translation I spent a bit of time wondering how much of the book was Zola's and how much was the translator's; less than I usually do though, I'm either getting more used to reading translated works or this was a good one.
Borrowed.

it’s world book day today. every day is book day around here. what’s bemusing me is:
World Book Day 2004 will take place on Thursday 4th March in the UK and Ireland.
which meaning of ‘world’ are they referring to then?

alistair cooke sent his last letter from america last week.
Since Letter From America began, Cooke has presented 2,869 shows, making up more than 717 hours of broadcasting time. This does not include other radio shows he has fronted.
it’s been the longest running speech radio programme in the world. i wonder how radio 4 will follow that!

how to write unmaintainable code – not that i need any instructions, of course… i’m alternately laughing and crying whilst reading this. it’s bringing back too many memories. the documentation section is particularly spot on, i think i’ve come across everything mentioned in it at one time or another, point 6 looks like something the author invented to make things sound worse than they ever could be. it’s not.

the oscars must’ve been pretty boring: i don’t know a thing about films and i’ve only seen one of this year’s contenders (the one that won eleven oscars) yet i still managed to get a 9/10 in kris’s oscar contest. i just picked the favourites from the betting and guessed at random for the categories that didn’t seem to have betting going on. not bad!
